The Effect of Applying Peer Review Technique towards Students’ Ability in Recount Text



ABSTRACT

Key words: Peer Review Technique, Recount Text, Students’ ability

            The objective of this thesis is to know whether the implementation of peer review technique has positive influence toward the students’writing ability in recount text or not.
            Based on review of related theories and frame of thinking, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows: peer review technique gives positive effect in teaching writing. In other words, the students who use peer review technique will get achievement result of writing better than the students who do not use peer review technique.
            The writer uses two group designs; one group is an experimental group whereas the other is a control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The experimental group use peer review technique but the control group does not use peer review technique. Both of them are given the same writing test.
            The population of this research is the second year students at SMP with the total number 303 students. To collect the data, the writer took 60 students from the population as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique.
            The writer uses essay test as the instrument of the research. From an essay test the students must be able to arrange paragraph based on the instruction writing form (recount text). The test is done for 80 minutes.
            The data of this research is gained from the writing test that was given to the samples. To analyze the data, the writer uses t-test by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to know the differences between two groups. Based on the result of the data analysis, t-ratio is 4,520 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 and level significance 5% and the t-table is 2,000. It means that the ratio is higher than t-table (4,250>2,000). It can be concluded that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
            The conclusion of this research is there is positive effect of the implementation of peer review technique towards students’ ability in writing recount text of the eighth grade students of SMP.
